The Realities of an Acting Career

Thousands of people come to Los Angeles or New York with the hopes of becoming a star. The reality is that only a select few succeed but this hasn’t stopped many from trying. If you are considering this, you should ask yourself if you have what it takes to have a successful acting career.

If you don’t get the part in a television show, try to get a part on stage, on the radio or on motion picture productions. You may not be given yet the starring role but only be given a supporting one which isn’t that bad when you are just starting out.

While waiting for someone to call, you should also find work in independent films, in commercials, night clubs and theme parks. There are also ads for requiring some actors to do some voiceovers in animated features, audio books and other electronic media like computer games.

For those who have been in the industry for quite a while and have not yet received any new projects, you should see if you can land a teaching position in a high school or university drama department or a job in an acting conservatory.

Since television shows are shot on a seasonal basis and movies are finished in a matter of months, the job of an actor is short term ranging from a day to a several months.  One of the things that you have to deal with sometimes is the undesirable and unpleasant working conditions as well as stress that go with the territory.

This may include working long and irregular hours, traveling across the country and shooting a scene under adverse weather conditions. You won’t always get the chance to sleep in a hotel so most of the time you will have to bunk in a trailer. If there is a break, you can go back there or just wait in the dressing room until its time to perform the scene.

If you happen to have a part in a television show, you have to be able to memorize your lines quickly because this may change within minutes. This is more challenging when you are performing this live in front of a studio audience.

If the scene you are shooting is done out of town or out of the country, don’t expect to see your family often or have a social life. You will just have to make up for this when everything is finished.

Aside from wearing make up and putting on costumes, you should always be in good physical condition to be able to perform a part so you will be able to take cues and work around complex technical sets and still be able to project your voice audibly.

Before the director or producer can say cut and print, you will have to do a lot of rehearsals and a lot of takes so everyone will get it right. If you are worried that they will work you like a dog, don’t bother because there will always be breaks in between so you avoid experiencing dehydration or heat exhaustion.

The reality of an acting career is that it will take a lot of blood, sweat and tears for you to succeed in this business.  You may not always be nominated for an Oscar or Academy award for everything you have done but at least you have a job.

If you think it only takes beauty to get into Hollywood, think again! Just look at the rising stars nowadays and most of them are not what you will call classic beauties. In fact, some of them even have “defective” features by society’s standards before but because of their popularity have managed to turn them into coveted features or if not more or less accepted in society.

One classic example is the relatively full lips of Angelina Jolie who before have been criticized for her big lips. The same goes with the freckles of Lindsay Lohan or the chin of actress Reese Witherspoon.

When it comes to career, beauty is not the only basis. There are a lot of things that you need to put into an acting career to make a successful mix. Here are some of the ingredients for success that you need to have with you.

1. Talent
The most beautiful of them may rise to superstardom but without a substantial talent to back them up, they will end up fading into the background. Only those who really have the talent will stay on to make more and more movies. In fact, even if you are not as beautiful or as sexy, if you have the talent you can excel and even outshone others.

One example is America Ferreira who plays Ugly Betty or Jennifer Hudson who outshone Beyonce in the movie Dream Girls. They are proof that even with a not so covetous body, they can go head to head with the best in Hollywood and even win the race!

2. Luck
Some people may discount it but luck plays an important role too. Sometimes when auditioning in some low budgeted film or tv series, you will not expect anything but if it turns out to be such a hit, your name will be recognized all over the world. A lot of today’s actors and actresses were given lucky breaks.

Just look at Emma Watson and Daniel Radcliff who are not enjoying superstardom all over the world. They were not even stars when they were chosen to play the iconic role of Hermione and Harry Potter for the onscreen adaptation of a bestselling book.

3. Agent and stylists
Another must have in Hollywood is a good agent, someone with the connections. This is the person who will gain you entry to the hottest party so that you can get noticed or maybe secure a slot for you in an audition. Having someone do the marketing for you helps a lot in opening up opportunities. Another must have is a stylist who will help you become presentable in every function. Remember that Hollywood right now is all about fashion and you need to be properly dressed in order to get noticed.

4. Connections.
Let’s face it. If you have connections, it will be easier for you to go out there and meet people. This is the reason why a lot of the children of former actresses and actors are now enjoying stardom, they have backers who have opened the doors for them. This is not to say though that they do not have the talent or the discipline.

They also worked hard but it was easier for them to get where they are because they know people who held the key.

How to Keep Your Acting Career

Your first job as an actor or actress was great but it shouldn’t stop there. Some of the greatest celebrities have been in it for decades and you too can also have a successful acting career.

One of the things you have to do is continue to take up acting classes. There are many around and this will give you the chance to explore more of what you can do is an actor. This will prevent people from giving you the same role every time which shows that you are very versatile.

Although your manager is the one helping you look for more projects, you can do your share also by sending out your resume and photos to producers and directors. You have to remember that the entertainment industry is a tough business and there are upcoming actors and actresses like yourself fighting for the same spot. Ever wondered what happened to those who had a good movie a few years back and where they are now?

Most of the films and television shows have actors and actresses that are physically fit so if you want to be considered for a part, do your share by working out regularly. You may not afford a physical trainer but you can surely sign up for a gym membership.

You should also accept invitations to scene nights where you get the chance to put a 2 minute monologue. This event is usually attended by people in the industry who are looking for talents for a new show or as a guest in an ongoing show.

Don’t forget to bring a press kit so you can distribute a few to the people there. This will make it easy for them to get in touch with you or your agent.

It wouldn’t hurt to also take part in a small movie made by film student or an independent film. You won’t get that much money from them but at least you can add this project to your resume so people will know you are doing something to better improve who you are as an actor.

The sad truth about being an actor is that you won’t know when you will have another acting gig. This is why you have to take steps to improve your craft and believe it or not find other ways to supplement your income by perhaps getting a regular job because after all, we need to pay bills and other expenses.

Keeping your acting career is tough and you won’t hear celebrities saying that in front of a live camera when all they will say is how good things are and smile.

But just think about it, when was the last time did you see Mr. or Mrs. X on a television show or on the big screen? It may have been awhile and in order for them to continue living in a big house, they must have done something to stay afloat.

To find out how, it is best that you talk with your fellow actors and actresses so you will know exactly what to do when it hits you in the face. Remember that the success of your acting career greatly depends on your patience and persistence because without it, you don’t have a chance of staying long in this industry.

How to Jumpstart Your Acting Career

Almost everybody dreams of becoming an actor, but one the best way to becoming one is knowing how to jumpstart your acting career.

Knowing how to jumpstart you acting career is as equally important as sustaining it, not just limited to the fact that an acumen or impressive acting talent is enough to bring one to celebrity status or even to simply just promoting an art and build a name in the acting scene.

If you are just starting your acting career, it is but normal to invest time, effort and a lot of determination in order for you to establish a name, as well as creating a bankable reputation that can catapult one to achieve success in an acting career, better yet, fame and stardom.

But for starters, it is important to know the ins and outs of the acting industry, since it a major consideration to know the basics of the acting scene, in order for one to master the trade.

Acting is more than just a skill, it is an art. It is the art of character portrayal, be it in theater, television, film or through any other storytelling medium, be it in a dialogue or a singing or musical presentation.

It is the actor who usually manipulates his acting posture, voice and expression to communicate or portray the character he plays.

The actor ‘assumes the role’ of another, presents it before an audience in an artistic fashion.

Historically, the first person to assume the role of an actor was believed to be a man named Thespis, from Icaria of ancient Greece.

Plays during his time, which were then called choric dithyrambs, is a chorus made up of 50 singers or portrayers who narrates the story through song.

Thespis was one of those composing the chorus and sang together with the group until one fateful event, as was told through time, when he stepped out of the chorus during one narrative song and spoke to the audience as a separate character in the story.

This led to the beginning of how acting is associated with character portrayal.

From his name was derived the term thespian, which has come to mean any sort of performer, mainly an actor.

Actors ideally should possess a number of skills like good vocal projection, clarity of speech, physical expressiveness, good sense of perspective, emotional versatility, creative imagination, situational analysis and ability to immerse an portray a number of emotional and physical conditions.

Well-rounded actors, moreover, are also skilled in singing, dancing, imitate dialects and accents, improvisation, observation and stage combat.

There are also special programs that are also being offered to help boost one’s acting skill and talent, which is always geared toward better enhancing an individual’s acting ability.

Now that you have an idea about the basic information you need to know about acting, there are a few things to consider which could help you a lot in jumpstarting your acting career.

But with the thousands of would-be actors out there, one has to be mindful that the acting industry is a demanding sector, considering the fact that there are only a limited number of casts – from the lead down to all the supporting roles – for every movie, play or television show.

One has to be innovative and creative enough to allow one’s self to be seen or heard, since not everybody is suited to a role that the character demands or requires for a particular play.

All the same, just make sure to be conscious about how to effectively jumpstart your acting career.

Getting Started on Organic Gardening

More and more people are getting into organic gardening because it is more environment-friendly, more healthy, a wonderful pastime and can help them save money by having all the crops they need in the backyard. If you are one of those people who are planning to have their own organic garden, here are some helpful tips for you:

1. Decide the crops that you want. Since you are into organic gardening, it is best to if you start with seeds first. Today, there are so many available seeds in most groceries and markets. But, you cannot just grab a pack of seeds without considering if it will grow in your environment. For starters, it is best to stick with vegetables and beans to try what is suited for your site condition. Once you have determined which are the plants suited for the condition of your site, then you can purchase other seeds that you want to grow.

2. Prepare the proper containers. In organic gardening, there is no need for expensive and special containers. As long as these are tapered, then it would do your plant good. When you decide to go into organic gardening, check out your kitchen first. If you can find old yogurt containers, empty juice and milk cartons, tubes of potato chips, cans of sauces and juices, and slightly damaged pails or dipper, you can clean then up and start filling them with clay and other organic matter to prepare for seed planting.

If you don’t have any of the mentioned containers, you can always buy in the nearest supermarket nut make sure that these have tapered sides so the crop can easily slip out. Aside from containers that are at least 3 inches deep, other container options for you include flats or shallow trays but these are not advisable if you plan to plant two or more kinds of plants because the roots may be tangled and would lead to the death of the crop.

Make sure that the containers are very well cleaned using lukewarm water dashed with chlorine bleach to ensure that the germs are killed inside. After washing, leave it on the open air to let it dry. (TIP: If you can let it dry directly under the sun, it will be best because all the residues will be removed.)

3. Be sure to have ready packets of planting mix. Planting mixes help seeds to sprout very well that is why you should always have extra packets for your organic gardening. It is best if you use planting mixes that are sterile because they are safe for your plants and for you as well.

4. Label each container properly. Since seeds look alike when they sprout, it is best if all the containers are labeled properly. Aside from making it easy for you to identify which is which, labeling is also crucial to avoid planting the same seed over again.

5. Let there always be light. If you are into organic gardening, make sure that there is plenty of air and light available. If natural sunlight is not available in your area, try to create a makeshift light source such as a fluorescent light bulb or tube that can be brought in most grocery and hardware stores. Make sure that you place them properly so the sprouts can get all the light they need to grow healthy.

Fundamental Organic Gardening Tips

And the race is on. On the right corner is an anything and everything goes garden which uses the best chemical fertilizers and pesticides the market today has to offer. While on the left corner is an organic garden that uses only the cycles of nature to cultivate the soil and grow the plants. If you’re on the left corner’s side what will you do? Like a boxer’s second you should have a set of instructions for your fighter, but in this case a set of organic gardening tips will definitely come in handy.

Organic gardening involves growing healthy plants and having high quality produce without the use of chemicals whatsoever. There are a number of ways or techniques that you could use when going organic. The following are some general tips or guidelines that would help you begin and maintain an organic garden. Remember that you don’t need a big area of land to go organic.

The first tip for you is to develop a great organic soil. And the first way to do that is to give your soil some compost material. Compost one of the major components of an organic soil. Without it, your soil will not contain enough minerals for your plants to grow healthy.

Aside from composts, you can add other organic materials into the soil to make it more suitable for your plants. If composts are not readily available, organic growers usually add different kinds of animal manures into the soil. This will act as your organic fertilizers to add to the useful soil nutrients that your plants will need.

The second tip would be to plant the right kinds of plants for the right kinds of soil. Also, take into consideration how much sunshine your garden receives and even the temperature in your area when choosing the plants you will have in your organic garden. It would be to your advantage to choose well-adapted plants in your organic garden.

Also, by choosing your plants wisely you would be able to plan how big, the layout, and the number the different kinds of plants you will have in your garden. We know for a fact that each vegetable, for example, requires different growing space than others.

Another useful tip would be positioning your garden so that it will fall under a shade. Or you can create a makeshift canopy to shade your garden. Shaded gardens are low maintenance, that’s the main advantage. Under the shade, your garden will grow fewer weeds and definitely will not require more water than when it is constantly under the sun. We’re not saying that a good garden is only a shaded one. We’re merely citing the advantages and the benefits of growing your organic garden under shades.

For pest control, the best tip we could give you is to go down and get dirty. The organic way of pest management involves identifying which ones are pests and picking them off by hand. Yes, you read it right. You need to find the insects and pick them off your plants. However, if you don’t feel like it, you can apply a number of organic solutions that you can easily make from common household ingredients. You can also introduce their natural predators to your garden to help maintain the pests into a minimum.

The key for both pest management and weed control is to act quickly. Once you have noticed that there are weeds growing or your plants are being damaged by insects, you should start pulling off the weeds or picking off the insects.

There you go. A few general organic gardening tips to get you started. With the right attitude, the right approach, and armed with the right techniques, you will be able to grow a healthy organic garden and you will be able to harvest all its benefits in the end.

Elements of Organic Gardening

Organic gardening in the truest sense means gardening without the use of any chemical substances, may they be in the form of fertilizers, pesticides, growth enhancers, etc. Some people think that if they use only small amounts of chemical fertilizers they still are producing organic. But they are wrong. Let’s tackle some of the misconceptions and issues that surround organic gardens.

Don’t get us wrong, organic gardens don’t mean just leaving them to nature. It does need fertilization and pest management as well. However, you will use materials, techniques or approaches that are truly organic.

When it comes to fertilizers, for example, organic gardens obviously need fertilizers that are either plant or animal in origin and not petroleum or chemical based as most synthetic fertilizers are made of. So this means, organic gardens will have to rely on composts, animal manures, etc to provide added nutrients to the soil that the plants needs for growth. It’s a good thing really, natural based fertilizers is less damaging to the soil in the long run that synthetic ones.

One of the many tips an expert organic grower will give you is that importance of maintaining a healthy soil. Some studies have found out that soils that are not treated with any chemical or synthetic fertilizers or herbicides grow plants that attract less pests. There are several ways to protect your soil. Covering it with vegetation or mulch will protect the soil surface from unnecessary damage from excess sun exposure and erosion from winds and rains. Remember that the top layers of the soil contain the living organisms that plants needs.

At times, organic gardens are also beleaguered by pests and you need to provide some sort of support or else your plants can easily be destroyed by aphids, worms, etc. There a number of effective alternatives for commercial chemical fertilizers. Some are readily available in your own kitchen which makes them really convenient.

Garlic and peppers for instance can be utilized as a spray against common pests. Extracts from the neem tree is also a great weapon against leaf eating, stem boring, or flower devouring pests. Also, you should note that spiders, ladybugs, and lacewings are three of the many insects that are on your side. These insets are natural predators of aphids, worms, larvae, and other pests so treat them nicely.

Another way to manage the pests in your garden is by thinking ahead. When you planted your plants, you could also place along side them plants that are natural repellants of insects such as marigolds which are very effective against nematodes.

Everything about an organic garden should revolve around nature.

Sometimes, it is nice to view organic way of gardening as a means where we can contribute to the protection of nature by helping minimize the use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers that are harmful to the environment. May it be a flower garden, your lawn and shrubs, a vegetable patch, or even a fruit and herbs garden, as long as you incorporate organic techniques you are helping build a better future for the next generation.

These are only a few elements that you will have to internalize when start your own organic garden. Just remember that organic gardening is a technique where emphasis is on the interaction of living organisms.

The History of Organic Gardening

You could say that the history of organic gardening started centuries ago when ancient civilizations would till the soil, plant the crops and then harvest them. As the demand for such goods increased, fertilizers or pesticides were used to help grow crops but because  It was only later on that people realized these were also being eaten after they were washed thus there was a campaign to go back to organic gardening.

There was renewed interest in the 1980’s that people in the US began to switch back to organic gardening. The Department of Agriculture even gave the farmers incentives to this old approach and as the demand for such products grew, more and more people have shifted to this method. This has been the trend in many countries especially in Europe.

But what is organic gardening? Well, aside from no longer using fertilizers and pesticides, gardeners will have to rely on compost, crop residue, crop rotation, integrated pest management and mechanical cultivation in order to preserve soil productivity and combat pests.

Currently, such organic gardening methods are regulated by the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements which helps farmers grow crops in 75 million acres of land across the globe.

Their goal can be summed up into two words and that is sustainable development so that the land that is used will be around for the next generation because there is a healthy ecosystem.

Is organic gardening effective? The answer is yes. Over a 22 year study that was released to the public in 2005, the results showed that going back to the basics produces the same amount of corn and soybean yields as conventional methods. However, it does so by consuming less energy and without any pesticide residue.

A study done by the University of Michigan shows developing countries that practice organic gardening could double or even triple their crops mainly because they do not have the financial resources to buy pesticides or fertilizer.

The nice thing about organic gardening is that farmers are not the only ones that can do it because you too can make this happen in your own backyard. You just have to learn how to till the soil and keep it in good condition, how to make your crops grow and how to fight against pests so you will be able to harvest them.

You can even turn this into a hobby and see how fun it is to make grow your own vegetables instead of buying these from the grocery. So, go online or buy a few books to learn how easy it is to do.

Remember, the key to a successful harvest regardless of what you decide to plant is all in the planning. Take into account how much you are willing to spend, your limited space and how much time and effort is in your hands.

You will also need to get the right gardening tools like gloves and a tiller to break the soil because it makes the task much easier than doing this by hand so that in a few months, you will be able to see what you planted grow.

As you can see, the history of organic gardening isn’t really something new. We have been doing it for a very long time and we probably lost sight of it but we learned our mistakes and we are simply going back to the basics.

Organic Gardening is perfect for you and perfect for the environment. With the world’s problem now with global warming, one must wonder and suggest ways of helping find answers to such. Big or small, everybody can have their share in the solution.

Organic farming may be one because it is like recycling what is already available in the environment to be able to produce the greens. The gardener is helping the environment by growing plants and more so, by helping in diminishing waste in a natural way.

Synthetic is Out
With organic gardening, one must rely only on his/her ability and on whatever nature has for them to be able to come up with the crops. This requires more work, patience and long hours and trial and error procedures on the part of the farmers but once they see the results, they won’t feel bad at all.

With organic farming, the gardeners depend on the environment to supplement their crops. For example, composting fallen leaves, clipped grass, animal manures and other resources would create fertilizers. In making compost, one may opt to do it by oneself, periodically checking on the compost to see if it needs more water to it, or more materials should be added on it. Or they may just pile up what others may consider as trash and let nature, the microorganisms, earthworms and the soil itself do the composting naturally.

The latter is easier to do but takes longer period of time and the result will not be as good as the compost done the way that was first discussed. A good compost will serve as the plant’s fertilizer and likewise a pesticide. If you opt to do the latter, make sure to use only the decomposed materials from the pile so as to come up with better use of such with your crops.

Choose Your Plants
In organic gardening, it is best to know first the condition of the environment that you are in. Study the soil and weather before choosing the right produce fit for your site. This way, it will not be as hard maintaining the crops.

Gardening Systems
There are certain terms in organic gardening that has evolved through time because this is being done since the early years.

Rudolf Steiner quoted Biodynamic farming. While a no-till approach for small time production of grains was invented by Masanobu Fukuoka, a Japanese writer and at the same time, a farmer. This he also called the Natural Farming. Other gardening techniques for small scale production are the French Intensive, Biointensive and Small Plot Intensive kinds of farming.

The abovementioned are formal organic farming systems that have specific requirements and techniques.

Gardening Tools
To complete your gardening set-up, you would have to have tools. Now don’t be swept by the oh-so-many fancy gardening tools that are available in the market. Some are just to fancy as to having a real use with what you really need to do.

But to start with your organic experience, you might want to try having some or all of the following. A folding saw with a rubber handle is recommended as long as its blade is replaceable. A Moth-Blocker will be most beneficial, on the other hand, for crops like that cauliflower and broccoli because this will hinder the moths from laying its eggs on the produce. A Row Cover or Shade Fabric can be bought or can be done at home if you know how to do such. This will provide the needed shade for your plants. Of course, you have to invest on a good digging tool because you will need this a lot, just like a hat, which you should also have to protect yourself from the sun’s rays.

With everything ready and with the proper information that you are now equipped with, organic gardening is perfect so you may want to start with it as soon as possible. Mother Nature will surely thank you for doing so.
